BASL donates electronic tabs to children’s homes to aid education

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has handed over electronic devices (tabs) to children’s homes to facilitate online learning in collaboration with the Association of Sri Lankan Lawyers in the United Kingdom – ASSULK.

Devices were handed over to homes managed by the probation and child welfare offices in the districts of Gampaha and Batticaloa, with the facilitation of the Civil Society Collective for COVID-19 Response (CSO Collective). Twenty homes located at Gampaha, Katana, Pamunugama, Kandana, Biyagama, Batticaloa, Kallady, Valachenai, Thirupaluamam, Chettipalayam, Kaluwanchikudy benefited from this initiative.

Devices were also handed over to the SOS villages to be used at their six facilities located at Piliyandala, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Jaffna, Moneragala and Anuradhapura. 

Bar Association of Sri Lanka President Saliya Pieris, PC said this donation was intended to benefit the students preparing for the Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations residing at these homes and said he was hopeful that the administrators of the homes would ensure their utilisation to the optimum, whilst prioritising the students that need them most.

He also thanked the CSO Collective who assisted the BASL CSR Committee in identifying the Government managed homes that needed these electronic devices and facilitating the delivery of the devices to them. 

Bar Association of Sri Lanka Secretary Rajeev Amarasuriya said that this initiative was mooted by the Association of Sri Lankan Lawyers in the United Kingdom – ASSULK who wanted to support those affected by the ongoing Pandemic and that it was through the CSR Committee of the BASL that it was proposed to donate these tabs to children’s homes. He went on to state that this was an important CSR project that supported education of very needy students.

This project is among many other initiatives planned by the CSR Committee of the BASL chaired by Dilani Alagaratnam and Co-Chaired by Rajitha Jayasuriya and Convenor Selyna Peiris.
