Project ‘Miles of Smiles 3.0’ is conducted by Leo Club of University of Colombo under the category of ‘Spotlight on children’. The project comes under ‘Sustainable Development Goal – Number 4 – Quality Education’ and mainly focusing the sub-goals as Target 4.1 – free Primary and Secondary Education, Target 4.5 – Eliminate all discrimination in education and Target 4.A - build and upgrade inclusive and safe schools.
The third phase of the project is conducted aligned with Target 4.5 – ensure equal access to education for the children in vulnerable situations. It was conducted in two places as a book donation for the underprivileged children for the school year 2022 which will begin in March. The venues were Sri Susila Kanishta Vidyalaya – Urapola and Thalpawila Central College – Dondra.
“By coordination of the academic staff of the respective schools, we identified the kids who are facing the highest financial difficulties. We were able to benefit more than 30 underprivileged kids under this phase,” the Leo Club of University of Colombo said.
This phase was completely sponsored by Atlas Axilla Ltd., under the program Sipsavi, which aims to support the right to education for all Sri Lankan children. Due to the ongoing pandemic situation in the country, the program was conducted with the presence of few Leo members of the club.
Leo Club of University of Colombo was appreciative of the principals of the schools, Priyangani Kumari from the academic staff of Sri Susila Kanishta Vidyalaya and Gayani Chathurmi from the academic staff of Thalpawila Central College for their continuous support in making this program a success. Atlas Axillia Co. Ltd.’s Rashintha Ferdinando, Ransika Rajapaksha and Kaushali Kusumpala were also commended for their coordination and enormous contribution towards this worthy cause.
