Sri Lanka celebrates World Children’s Day on 1 October and it offers us an opportunity to promote and celebrate children’s rights that will build a better world for them.

The Management Council of the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya (AAUP) Colombo Chapter selected the Katumuluwa Junior School, Kanaththewewa in Paduwasnuwara Division of Kuliyapitiya Zone in North Western Province to enhance the library facilities of the School on World Children’s Day in 2024.

AAUP Colombo Chapter donated 450 books, stationery and school supplies for the School library and students.

In addition, the donation of two gymnastic mattresses will be immensely helpful to the School team selected to represent the North Western Province at the forthcoming All Island School Aerobic Gymnastics Tournament which is an opportunity to recognise the talents of the school athletics represented in every Province of Sri Lanka.

The donations were made at the World Children’s Day Celebrations at the school on 1 October 2024 represented by members of the Association together with the principal, staff of the school, students and parents. A tree was planted at the school premises to commemorate the event.

The Rev. Galahapitiye Premarathne Thero commended the efforts of the AAUP Colombo Chapter in promoting the physical and mental well-being of the children in this rural area, stated the Association’s secretary, Palitha Siyambalapitiya.
