Abans successfully completed the second stage of their ambitious CSR initiative ‘From Your Laptop to Their Future’ by presenting 18 Toshiba laptops to deserving university students on 23 July 2014 at the Ministry of Higher Education in the presence of the Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake who presented the laptops to the students. Senior Brand Manager Chathura Jayawardana of Abans PLC representing Abans also gifted a few laptops at this event. Representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education and Abans were present on the occasion. The eighteen students were selected from 18 government universities islandwide on recommendations given from the university academic staff of students with excellent performance who could not afford to purchase a laptop. Understanding the importance that computers provide in today’s world, in education and in enhancing the knowledge of students, Abans took up the challenge as a CSR initiative to provide Toshiba laptops to deserving students. Through wide publicity in the daily newspapers in March this year, Abans offered Toshiba laptop computers to student’s islandwide in the age group 14-21 years. The students were required to write to Abans describing how the laptop would help them in their education. From the numerous responses received, the first batch of 20 deserving students were selected and presented with laptops on 8 July 2014 as the first phase of their ambitious CSR project. Very few students in Sri Lanka have the privilege of on-line access to various educational information and this seriously affects their ability to improve their knowledge of information and technology skills. Abans having realised the implications of this digital divide have made a genuinely heartfelt move by launching ‘From Your Laptop to Their Future’ to empower bright young minds who will be the future leaders of our nation. Computer knowledge stretches far beyond the student stage of one’s life. Basic IT knowledge and application is now a prerequisite for almost any job and a must to build a successful career. Abans believe that equipping talented students through their secondary and tertiary educational years will prepare them for what awaits them when they are ready to launch their careers. This is the first time that a laptop donation drive of such a magnitude is being carried out by a single corporate entity in Sri Lanka. Rather than limiting the donation to a few educational institutes, this initiative of Abans will benefit students from all over the island. Abans generously contributed Rs. 1,000 from the sale of each Toshiba laptop during the period 15 February to 30 April 2014 towards off-setting the cost of this project. Abans is an authorised partner for Toshiba, a leading global brand of IT equipment and accessories which are very popular in Sri Lanka for their superior quality and performance, backed by Abans reliable guarantee, after-sales-service and affordable easy payment terms.
