The 30 year war in Sri Lanka affected many schools in the Northern Province. Although the war ended in 2009 rebuilding the schools is still in progress. One school that was seriously damaged was Mullivaikkal West Government Tamil Medium School (GTMS) in Mullaitivu. The school has more than 250 students and understanding the real need of the hour, AIA Insurance selected the school to benefit from the company’s Corporate Responsibility initiative to help build its damaged infrastructure facilities and provided a school building with five class rooms. In addition, AIA donated a mini computer training centre that the school needed to revitalise the education of the students. AIA Chief Executive Officer Shah Rouf and Deputy CEO Upul Wijesinghe, together with Director – HR, Chathuri Munaweera participated in the ceremony to hand over the newly built school building to the students recently. “AIA takes great pride in contributing to education in the war-torn North by rebuilding the infrastructure facilities that were damaged,” said Shah Rouf. “Children are the future of our country. We believe all children deserve the chance to have a better future and as the country is slowly but steadily moving into a new chapter, we wanted to make a real difference. Inspiring academic excellence is one of our most important social responsibility endeavours that has made a difference to the lives of our most promising children. This is another important step in our commitment to making nationally relevant initiatives possible.” This is the second school in the North to be renovated by AIA insurance. Two years ago AIA Insurance donated class rooms to the Vasavilan Navothya School in Jaffna in a contribution to improving the quality of education in the region.
