An estimated 500 cases of dengue are reported a week in Sri Lanka according to statistics from the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry and 58 people have died from the dreaded disease already this year. In an effort to minimise the danger, AIA Insurance staff conducted “Wipeout”, an anti-dengue initiative at one such potential mosquito breeding site recently. Over one hundred staff members of AIA Insurance volunteered and gathered at Narahenpita railway station and its vicinity to clean up the area, especially by picking up containers strewn about causing breeding grounds for mosquitoes. They went one step further and distributed educational leaflets to create awareness and motivate the public to keep the environment clean. They were accompanied by animators dressed up as mosquitoes to draw attention to the menace. The initiative was conducted with approval from National Dengue Control Unit of the Health Ministry with assistance from Public Health Inspectors and other officials. “We regularly engage in nationally relevant Corporate Responsibility endeavours and across Pan Asia AIA we promote healthy living. This particular initiative helped our team to understand the gravity of the situation and how the disease is propagated so extensively and rapidly,” commented HR Director Chathuri Munaweera.
