The 15th Ambassador’s Ball in honour of the US Ambassador Michele J. Sison was held recently at the Hilton Colombo. The ball was sponsored by HSBC and Dialog. This grand event was attended by around 400 AmCham members and their special invitees. It has been a tradition to present a donation to a charity of the US Ambassador’s choice from the proceeds derived from this event. This year the recipient selected by was the Emerge Lanka Foundation that supports Sri Lankan girls, ages 10-18, who have been removed from their homes due to past abuse or the threat of abuse. Emerge Lanka equips these girls with skills and resources for their futures, using a comprehensive curriculum that emphasises leadership, life skills, and business knowledge, while simultaneously generating a financial foundation for each program participant through the creation of unique jewellery. Jewellery created through the program is sold through avenues that raise awareness about the cause, with profits going back to the individual artists who created the pieces. The donation was handed over at an AmCham Networking event held on 1 August 2013 at the Blue Elephant, Hilton Colombo and was attended by all the sponsors of the event and AmCham members. This year GVR Lanka Ltd. headed by Mahasen Samaravijaya a Sri Lankan born US citizen and entrepreneur who has just made a substantial investment with his partners on a mixed real-estate development project in Kandy, which comprises of a luxury residential apartment complex and a four star hotel project has graciously risen to the occasion and donated an equal amount to the amount pledged by the Chamber thus making the total contribution Rs. 400,000.
