Another 130 young Sri Lankans have been given the gift of English language skills under Commercial Bank’s ongoing community project to promote English literacy on a national scale. This is the second batch of students to be presented with certificates under the program after successful completion of the course for schools in the Kalutara District. Comprising of 16 two-hour lessons spread over four months, the English course was conducted by the Life English Academy (LEA), a leading English language training institution in Sri Lanka, as an extra-curricular activity for the selected schools. The course for the Kalutara District was conducted at Dharmapala Maha Vidyalaya Wadduwa, and was attended by students of Wadduwa Balika Vidyalaya, Pohaddaramulla Kanishta Vidyalaya, Madawilgoda Sri Gnanananda Kanishta Vidyalaya, Weeragama Vidyalaya, Dhammananda Maha Vidyalaya, St.Mary’s College Wadduwa, Pothupitiya Maha Vidyalaya, Thalpitiya Kanishta Vidyalaya, Mawala Kanishta Vidyalaya and the host school Dharmapala Maha Vidyalaya. The structured English education course conducted under this program focused on spoken English and basic writing skills as required for personal development. Commenting on the objectives of the program, Commercial Bank’s Deputy General Manager Marketing Hasrath Munasinghe said: “English literacy is mandatory for personal development as well in achieving global success as a nation. Students in rural areas in particular appreciate the value of enhancing their English skills. This program is intended to make a positive contribution towards a brighter future for Sri Lanka’s youth.” “Recognising the fact that IT and English literacy go hand in hand, the bank’s adoption of English language education complements its flagship CSR initiative to promote IT literacy through the donation of IT labs to schools,” Munasinghe said. Commercial Bank’s well-evolved on-going program of donating IT training facilities to needy schools has to date benefited more than 125,000 students from 125 schools, and the bank intends to conduct its English education program on the same scale. The inaugural program of the bank’s English education project began in September 2012 at the Kiriella Madhya Maha Vidyalaya in Ratnapura for more than 250 students aged 16 years upwards. Initially, 160 students applied to participate in this program but the numbers increased to 250 due to overwhelming demand.
