AVIVA NDB donates building to Jaffna School

AVIVA NDB Insurance donated a building with five class rooms to Vasavilan Navothya School in Jaffna recently as a part of the company’s corporate responsibility endeavour towards the upliftment of the educational standards of children in need.  The project was sponsored by the Aviva Group.  



The global Aviva Group champions an international program called ‘Street to School’ in communities in which it operates, to uplift the education and living standards of underprivileged children to give them an opportunity to realise their full potential.   

In Sri Lanka, AVIVA NDB Insurance signed a Letter of Understanding with the Ministry of Education, Northern Province to improve the infrastructure of the school.  This is the fourth ‘Street to School’ project initiated by the company.

Vasavilan Navothya School, situated in the Jaffna district is one of the schools handed over to the public by the security forces after an accelerated de-mining process within the school premises. Having identified the dire need of the school to build the infrastructure badly damaged during the war, AVIVA NDB set out to improve the school’s infrastructure. The school has over 1100 students.  

The building was ceremonially opened by Upul Wijesinghe, the Deputy Managing Director of AVIVA NDB Insurance and K. Elankoovan, the Secretary to the Governor, Northern Province.   

Speaking at the event Wijesinghe commented: “The focus of AVIVA NDB’s Corporate Social responsibility initiatives go beyond commercial needs and touches many lives including children who are in need of a helping hand to realise their life’s possibilities.”  

K. Kanakarajah, Principal of Vasavilan Navothya School, commended the invaluable support given by AVIVA NDB to enhance the education standards of the children of the School.  He further appreciated the initiatives such as book donations which go to enhance the knowledge of the youngsters. The company donated books to the school library in order to improve the reading habit of students.
