CBL among top 10 best corporate citizens in Sri Lanka

Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. (CBL) once again captured the spotlight at the ‘Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Awards 2014 concluded recently. The event is organised annually by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and is now considered to be a ‘must attend’ among the country’s corporate glitterati. The gala annual event which seeks to honour the contribution to public good, through commitment to critical social causes by Sri Lanka’s distinguished and top-notch corporates, saw CBL clinching the award for being among the best top 10 corporates. The company has been in the slot of top corporates for six years. At this awards ceremony CBL was also recognised as the corporate with best financial performance among the best top corporate citizens.       In addition, CBL’s CSR initiatives on community development and assistance for children’s education were recognised under the Corporate Citizen Sustainability projects. CBL’s Munchee Samaga Gamata Sarana, the community development initiative, was the recipient of certificate of merit for best infrastructure development in the sustainability projects category. The Munchee Samaga Gamata Sarana program empowers villagers island-wide through identifying and fulfilling long-standing infrastructure development needs of relevant communities. This is the third occasion that the contribution of this project towards the community upliftment was recognised at the Best Corporate Citizen Awards. Munchee Samaga Gamata Sarana has reached thousands of people in all parts of the country by presenting them with more than 80 different projects. These projects have generated enormous value for the community while fulfilling their long felt common needs.             “Our corporate social responsibility vision is to make a qualitative difference that impacts, benefits and influences the lives of Sri Lankans who do not have access to basics that we often take for granted,” said Group Director and Head of Marketing and Sales Nandana Wickramage. He went on to add that the Munchee Samaga Gamata Sarana community development initiative which involves mainly the infrastructure development in the most rural areas facilitates the community to participate in their most essential day to day activities. It is pity that these community needs have been not attended for decades due to a variety of reasons, he further stated. Munchee Tikiri Shishyadara, the educational assistance program of the CBL was also recognised at this year’s Best Corporate Citizen Awards. The program which started in 1997 with the objective of preventing school dropouts has benefitted thousands of children to pursue their education. Some them have already entered the medical, engineering and management faculties of the state universities and are appreciative of the assistance they received from the Munchee Tikiri Shishyadara program. Corporate Social Responsibility has become part and parcel of the business of CBL and being a responsible corporate citizen, the company continues to integrate itself into the community it operates in. This involves intermingling with diverse stakeholders of the business. The company has made Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) an inherent and distinct accessory to its business model that combines business systems with the continued development of the less privileged communities. CSR efforts of the company aim at developing the community, the economy and eventually the nation. In order to achieve this, it is ensured that the company’s CSR operational mandate includes projects that provide unique and effective solutions to community needs. Fund allocation and utilisation of resources on each project is structured to provide the most beneficial and effective solutions. Overall CSR initiatives are approached through a clear focus on strategic CSR, supporting economic growth through sustainable business success. In order to attain maximum efficiency and sustainable growth, the CSR projects are implemented under five clearly defined categories, namely, education, arts and culture, sports, disaster response and uplifting the community. These projects support and improve the quality of the national workforce through empowering youth to face challenges for a better tomorrow.
