CCC drought relief program benefits 800 families

The drought relief campaign led by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce benefitted close to 800 families living in the Anuradhapura and Trincomalee districts. The relief goods collected by the Ceylon Chamber, with the support of the private sector, were distributed among early last week, with each family getting a 15 kg package which included dry rations such as dhal, sugar, canned fish, rice, tea leaves, dry fish, soya meet and several other items. The relief support was provided by firms such as CIC, Lion Brewery, Vintage Teas, Swiss Biogenic, Eureka Technology Partners, Watawala Plantations PLC, Eskimo Fashions, Lanka Milk Foods, Forbes, Sunshines Ltd. and also SLAITO. More than 540 families living in the Anuradhapura District benefitted from the program, while another 250 families of the Trincomalee District too were given dry rations. The relief items were distributed during the early part of this week through the Sri Ranmuhtu Temple in Elayapaththuwa and Sandamaleliya Temple situated in Thanthirimale with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Economic Development, S.M. Chandrasena, and Senior Assistant Secretary General of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Suresh Pathirana. The relief items for affected families in the Trincomalee District were distributed through the GA office of the district. In the meantime, the Ceylon Chamber recently organized a special meeting at its premises, to appeal to the private sector to come forward to help the relief program. During the meeting representatives of most of the companies who attended the discussion said they have already started relief work and will further step up relief activities using their regional branches and networks.
