Johnson & Johnson and the CIC Group have come forward to sponsor ‘Pramithiyai Pragathiyai’, an island-wide quiz contest for school children initiated by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI), the National Standards Body of Sri Lanka and the sole authority in issuing quality certifications in Sri Lanka. The program was introduced to drive the importance of quality and standards to the community as well as to take the message to the greater society. The program is now being telecasted every Sunday at 3 p.m. on Sri Lanka’s national television (Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation). Quality is considered as a key matrix in the development of a country. When the products and services a manufacturer offers is of high quality, the entire country would consume goods of acceptable standards, contributing to healthier living which is why many manufacturers and businesses strive to obtain a quality certification for their products. The first round of the program was attended by over 5,000 students and seven students were selected for the final round per province among nine provinces. Schools participating will receive gifts and prizes but most importantly, students and adults alike will be made aware of the importance of maintaining quality standards and be knowledgeable consumers. “Quality standards are an important discipline that should be adhered to in manufacturing services, locally and internationally,” stated Dr. Lalith Seneviratne, Director General of the Sri Lanka Standards Authority. “Quality control guides consumers to safety and manufacturers to progress,” he continued. “Being an institution with over 50 years of existence, we observed that the level of knowledge on quality standards among Sri Lankan consumers is very low and ‘Pramithiyai Pragathiyai’ is expected to bring about a desirable change in the awareness levels of consumers,” he stated. CIC Group being in the forefront of sustainability and business ethics paves the way in confidence for initiatives that enhances awareness in quality. Internationally recognised as the highest quality, consumer product manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson enhances consumer experience through their globally loved and trusted brands assuring the best in product and quality standards for over hundred years. Among them, Johnson’s Baby is certified to be ‘Clinically Proven for Mildness’ and ‘No More Tears’ range of products that nourishes smooth skin for the mother and the baby. “Education on quality and standards should happen at an early age. It is only then that the children of tomorrow would know the difference of a product of high quality, which is why we decided to be a part of this program,” mentioned Samantha Ranathunga, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, CIC Holdings PLC. “We consider it an honour to be a part of this program with the SLSI.” “Johnson & Johnson markets scientifically proven products in Sri Lanka only after obtaining the SLS certification from the Sri Lanka Standards Institute,” stated Niroshan Kodikara, Senior Business Manager of Johnson & Johnson Sri Lanka. “Over the past 125 years Johnson & Johnson has been in operation in over 175 countries and the drive behind this stable journey is our ability to adhere to quality standards locally and internationally. So it is our responsibility to take this knowledge to the children and educate them so that they could move towards a happy and healthy life,” he added. “All students participating in this quiz will be given cash prizes and certificates. I wish all the students best of luck for a successful program,” he concluded. Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) is the National Standards Body of Sri Lanka, established under the Bureau of Ceylon Standards Act No. 38 of 1964. The Institution functioned under the name of Bureau of Ceylon Standards until the Act was repealed and replaced by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution Act No. 6 of 1984. The Institution now functions under the Ministry of Technology and Research and is governed by a Council appointed by the Minister in terms of the above Act. ‘Pramithiyai Pragathiyai’ is a snapshot of the important role played by the SLS.
