Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for planet earth, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The World Wide Fund for Nature is an international non-governmental organisation, working on issues regarding conservation, research and restoration of the environment and actively contributes towards a greener future. Earth Hour is observed worldwide annually encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday in March, as a symbol for their commitment towards preserving a healthier, resourceful, greener planet. It is an initiative that evokes a sense of responsibility in everyone. The Kingsbury too joined hands to support this worthy cause and took it beyond just that hour of observing energy conservation; and by doing so, proved its allegiance to the environment. A week prior to Earth Hour the hotel conducted training on recycling paper, the sessions initiated with the senior management and continued with the rest of the staff too. The program covered areas pertaining to Reduce, Reuse & Recycling, the triple R’s that contribute towards a greener future. The program also encompassed subjects such as recycling and using dry waste, to ensure minimum wastage. On 29 March, Earth Hour was celebrated by The Kingsbury at the Poolside. It also coincided with the launch of the recycling project of the establishment, with the senior management and staff of the hotel. The launch ceremony drew attention to not only the concept of Earth Hour, but to poignant issues such as the effects of carbon footprints and the importance of conserving energy. The ceremony continued with the theme of energy conservation through unplugged entertainment and serving of eco mocktails. Mr. and Mrs. Dissanayaka were the chief guests at this event, and the event was graced by members of the Green Team, staff and several guests. The Kingsbury has been popular for its excellent hospitality services. Having won two international awards, namely the “World Luxury Hotel’ Award, the ‘Wellness and Spa’ Award and the Student Hotel of the Year at the DS Student Brand Awards 2013, the hotel has already marked its name amongst its discerning guests. The establishment further ventures to act responsibly towards the environment by pledging to play its part towards creating a greener tomorrow.
