Elephant House Ginger Beer (EGB) is the only carbonated beverage in the local market which uses natural Ginger in its manufacture. This prompted the brand to, for the third successive year, sign up as Platinum sponsor of the annual ProFoods ProPack & AgBiz 2013 exhibition which was held from 23-25 August at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre, as part of their endeavour to encourage local agriculture and the use of home grown agro products in the manufacture of food items. The EGB stall at the ProFoods ProPack & AgBiz exhibition provided visitors with refreshment in the form of EGB and beverages from the increasingly popular Elephant House Light range. Demonstrations of innovative preparations using Elephant House products were another feature of the stall. Moreover, EGB has evolved into a beverage sought after by many to add that extra dimension to a meal given the element of fresh ginger that promotes proper digestion. A series of display boards documenting this progression also provided an informational component for fans of this popular beverage. The theme of the ProFoods ProPack & AgBiz exhibition this year was ‘From the farm to the kitchen,’ providing scope for a wide range of products and services to be showcased, including agro-based products, packaging solutions, machinery, processed food, etc. The thousands of visitors who walked through the exhibition area on the three days were treated to a vast array of new methods and improvements in the quality of products, creating a feeling of faith in natural agriculture in the face of recent revelations regarding harmful additives in certain constantly used food items. EGB and Elephant House have enjoyed a close affiliation with local farmers as the entire quantity of Ginger used in the manufacture of this beverage is sourced from local farming communities. Several community development projects have also enhanced the lives of these farmers under the sponsorship of Elephant House. The vast quantity of Ginger that is purchased by Elephant House can be assessed furthermore by the fact that EGB is presently exported to 26 countries in addition to the considerable volume of local sales. Present at the event was Chandima Perera, Head of Beverages at Ceylon Cold Stores PLC (Elephant House) and Vice President of John Keells Holdings PLC, who commented: “One of our Company’s main objectives is to encourage local farmers by purchasing their produce for our manufacture. Our consumers have benefitted by this in that they are able to enjoy the fresh, natural flavours thereof. We will continue to promote the use of locally sourced and processed food items, with the long term goal of propelling Sri Lanka towards self-sufficiency in terms of feeding our growing population.”
