A free health camp held on Saturday, 5 January 2013, in Devinuwara, Matara, has drawn 2,000 attendees.

Partnered by Elephant House, this was the 500th free health camp organised by Dr. Lakshman Weerasena, who has pioneered a series of island-wide free health camps, which first started with Mahiyanganaya on 15 December 1991.

Further, visitors to this event received drugs and medical equipment worth Rs. 2 million, as well as 500 free pairs of spectacles. In addition, attendees also accessed doctors representing up to 30 medical specialties.

To celebrate this program’s 500th free health camp milestone, Elephant House sponsored a stall from which it treated all 2,000 attendees to free Elephant House LITE sugar-free ice cream, in both chocolate and vanilla flavours, which was the only ice cream on offer at the event, due to it being widely regarded as the only locally available healthy ice cream dessert.

Meanwhile, this 500th milestone event also featured a number of notable attendees including Speaker of Parliament Chamal Rajapaksa, as well as Ministers Lakshman Yapa Abeygunawardena and Mervyn Silva.

Commenting on the event, Neil Samarasinghe, Head of Frozen Confectionary at Ceylon Cold Stores (Elephant House) and Vice President of John Keells Holdings, said: “For us, commemorating Dr. Weerasena’s 500th free health camp milestone was the perfect opportunity to, once again, show  potential customers that the Elephant House LITE sugar-free ice cream range was keeping up with their needs. In this case, we are offering them no less than a healthy alternative that continues allowing them to enjoy the goodness of ice cream.”
