Exploring the written word

The HSBC Galle Literary Festival 2012 marked numerous activities that engaged a plethora of novelists, historians, poets, playwrights, philosophers and biographers when the event took off from the 18 to 22 January, at the historic Galle Fort.

The much anticipated event which drew in thousands of visitors from across the country and elsewhere, set the stage for 100 children of G. Paramananda Vidyalaya, an underprivileged school in Galle to participate in an interactive workshop to help improve their language skills and fluency in English.     

Themed ‘Exploring the written word’, the one day session focused on practical learning where children aged 5-19 years were encouraged to read more and improve their vocabulary and literacy levels. Participants were grouped into teams and also taught how to develop their collaborative and cooperative skills with experienced British Council teachers and trainers.

The workshop was sponsored and conducted by HSBC in partnership with the British Council of Colombo.
