The Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind now called The Institute for the Hearing and Sight Impaired, is both a school and a home to 600 students who are either hearing or sight impaired. The Institute looks after these special people providing them with accommodation, food and education. Apart from being taught the National Curriculum up to the GCE O/L standard, they are also taught a vocation that will help them find employment when they leave the shelter of the Institute.

The Institute runs three residential schools, two in Ratmalana (about 15 km from Colombo) and a third in Jaffna in the northern tip of the island. Each school provides accommodation for about 200 students. The two schools at Ratmalana are the School for the sight Impaired and the school for the hearing impaired. The Nuffield School in Jaffna caters to both types of impairments.

The transformation that the School is able to bring about in these children is truly amazing. At the end of their stay in the school, far from being a burden on society, they are able to take their place in society as useful contributing members.

As a part of Hilton Colombo’s CSR, the hotel has been a part of this school for the last four years. The ‘Blue Energy Community Team’ that drives the hotel’s CSR project took the initiative and renovated the deaf school sick room recently with the management team personally getting involved on the final day with painting the entire sick room area. General Manager Rudolf Troestler said “It was a privilege to help the school and we made this day a special one with doing some fun activities together with the kids during their interval. Hilton Colombo has been partnering with the school for the last four years.”

This CSR initiative by Hilton Colombo was in celebration of 25 years of service excellence, continuing to be the trendsetters in the industry and delivering on Conrad Hilton’s vision of spreading the light and warmth of hospitality, in Sri Lanka.
