THE North Central and Eastern Provinces were once again faced with the disasters of Mother Nature, when the recent torrential rains created unprecedented flooding, leaving over one million people badly affected.

In response to the devastating floods, HSBC with the support of its staff and the regional office made a voluntary contribution to assist in the relief efforts. With the recommendation of UNICEF, the Rural Development Foundation (RDF) was assigned to proceed with the task of cleaning over 1,800 wells and making the environment conducive for normal living conditions.

The handing over of the cheque to the value of Rs. 3 million was made by Nick Nicolaou, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Sri Lanka and Maldives, to Ameer Mohamed Faaiz, the Chairman of RDF on 28 February 2011.

In support of this worthy cause, HSBC staff here in Sri Lanka and the Maldives contributed an amount of their choice which was equally matched by the bank. In addition, a separate contribution was made by the HSBC Group.

The funds will be utilised to purify 1,829 wells in the areas of Ampara and Batticaloa, which were worst affected with contaminated water, posing an increased threat of water borne diseases such as diarrhoea.

Apart from being deprived of proper shelter and sanitation facilities, access to clean water, food, clothing and medical treatment are other dire needs of this population. With the functioning of cleaner wells, the residents are expected to commence their day to day activities and the re-cultivation of crops, providing a sustainable livelihood for the future.

Nick Nicolaou, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Sri Lanka and Maldives said, “Being the world’s local bank, we feel it is our responsibility to come forward at a time when the nation is faced with difficulties.

We hope that our contribution will assist in the redevelopment of these areas and that our alliance with RDF will accelerate the resettlement process of these people in their homes and villages.”

In the recent past, HSBC has provided emergency disaster relief and helped rebuild communities of tsunami victims, Ratnapura flood victims and the IDPs in the north with the support of many partner organisations.
