The prevailing drought in the north, north central and eastern parts of the country continues to threaten many families with the lack of water with numbers rising as high as one million people. Collaborating its efforts, HSBC Sri Lanka through its on-going Global Water Program, was able to provide several large water storage tanks for the purpose of drinking and sanitation to over 100 families in the north and north central provinces. HSBC Sri Lanka is currently engaged in the restoration of a cascading tank system in Kapiriggama, a project undertaken in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) which seeks to benefit over 1,500 families in the North Central province. The HSBC Group has continuously engaged in water related projects around the world through its five-year $ 100 million partnership with WWF, WaterAid and Earthwatch entered into in 2013, to tackle water risks in river basins and bring safe water and improved sanitation to over a million people worldwide by 2018. So far the program has been able to provide sanitation to more than 500,000 people, and safe drinking water to more than 400,000.
