International Women’s Day celebrated at Temple Trees

Sri Lanka celebrated the International Women’s Day Thursday at a special ceremony held at the Temple Trees under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.



This year’s celebrations under the theme Let’s Protect girl Child” were held under the guidance of the Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Affairs.

Attorney General Eva Wanasundera who delivered the keynote address said that higher studies and high positions for women in the society are the best tool for women empowerment.

She pointed out that leading positions in the Sri Lankan judicial sector - the Chief Justice, the Attorney General and Secretary to the Ministry of Judiciary Services - are being held by women.

Minister Tissa Karaliyadda and Deputy Minister M.L.A.M. Hisbulla also addressed the gathering. Minister Tissa Karaliyadde informed that his Ministry has prepared a program series to eliminate violence and abuse on women and emphasised on the requirement to impose life imprisonment and denied general amnesty to women abusers.

The project titled “Let’s prevent women abuses” was inaugurated under the aegis of the First Lady. Awards were given to the women and women organizations that rendered a yeoman service for women development in the country.
