As the first phase, a week-long list of events held under the theme ‘Investment in Healthcare: Promotion, Provision and Access,’ are being held to commemorate Muslim Aid Day 2012, with Muslim Aid Sri Lanka conducting a dengue awareness program.

In keeping with their mission to serve humanity, the program instructed nearly 400 children, along with the National Dengue Control Unit of the Ministry of Health, at Hameed Al Hussainie School, Colombo 12 on 17 and 18 October, on methods of dengue identification and prevention.

Following the successful completion of the dengue prevention campaign in Colombo, the second phase of Muslim Aid day 2012 moved to Muttur and Horowpathana on 20 and 21 October, where eye camps were held at Al Hidaya Madya Maha Vidyalaya, Muttur and Muslim Maha Vidyalaya, Horopathana.

A medical team from the Kanthale Base Hospital, Trincomalee assisted Muslim Aid Sri Lanka to conduct the eye camp effectively on both days. At the eye camp in Muttur, 154 students, belonging to three communities, from 11 schools in the area had their eyesight tested, while in Horopathana, 203 students from four schools in the area were tested.

Out of those tested, 115 students were found to be in need of spectacles. Muslim Aid Sri Lanka has already made arrangements for 60 of these, and the rest are scheduled to follow shortly.

“Some students had no idea that they were suffering from eye problems and they were continuing with their daily work despite suffering from serious eye sight problems. We are happy that we were able to diagnose them and help them save their eyesight,” said a doctor from the Kanthale Base Hospital.
