The Export Import Bank of Korea (Korea Eximbank) implemented a community based initiative to support renovation of a kindergarten in Nanu Oya, in partnership with two other Korean companies, namely, Kolon Global and Keangnam Enterprise.

36 volunteers from Korea Eximbank, Kolon Global, and Keangnam Enterprise refurbished the ‘Wangioya Montessori’ early childhood development centre from 10 to 15 May. The volunteer program carried out under Korea’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activity brand ‘Hope Seed Program’ also provided sets of school supplies and medicines thus helping local children achieve a solid foundation for lifelong learning while leading a healthy life.

The volunteer program was specifically designed to inspire a sense of social responsibility among the Korean companies towards the country in which they execute infrastructure projects. In fact, Korea Eximbank has supported Sri Lanka with an aggregate amount of $ 606 million in loans on a commitment basis for 27 projects through its Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).

Improvement of the Hatton-Nuwara Eliya road ($ 57 million) is one such project which is of great national importance. The recently accomplished volunteer program in the Nuwara Eliya district will further contribute to the local community, since the volunteers not only transferred technical skills, but also shared knowledge on cultural aspects, and most importantly, built strong and long lasting friendships with local people that outlast their stay in Sri Lanka.

With the successful completion of this social service activity, Korea Eximbank anticipates to expand opportunities to contribute to the Sri Lankan society more effectively with other Korean companies. The team leader and Director General of Human Resource and Administration group of the bank Shin Deog-yong remarked, “We hope that this first trial of social contribution activity co-held by Korean companies can be the momentum for the friendship between Sri Lanka and Korea to become stronger.”
