Lankaputhra Development Bank helps restore Abayagiriya Chaitya

Lankaputhra Development Bank launched one of its social responsibility projects this year under the theme ‘Let’s get together and restore Abayagiriya’ at Anuradhapura recently by voluntarily contributing towards the restoration of the Stupa.

This national campaign was carried out on 23 July with the participation of a majority of the staff of the bank. It was organised by Polonnaruwa branch Manager Rahula Senanayake and his staff.



It was a notable achievement as bank was able to enlist the support of its clients and the business community of over 500 participants to make this effort a success.

Expressing his views on this conservation work, Lankaputhra Development Bank General Manager/CEO Lasantha Amarasekera said that as a state owned entity, the bank always supported such national endeavours and further stated that priority is given especially in the discharge of its social responsibility to sectors with national significance who do not receive the attention of other parties.

Amarasekara thanked the Chairperson of the bank Kumudiniy Kulathunga and other stakeholders for their support and cooperation to make this event a success.

It has been chronicled that Abayagiriya Stupa which is considered a very ancient and a world heritage site in the Anuradhapura city was built in BC 1 by King Wattagamini Abhaya.

It rises to a height of 235 feet with a circumference of 310 feet at the base and covers a 500 acre sacred area site. This historic edifice suffered damage from time to time due to attacks by invaders.

Lankaputhra Develop-ment Bank, which is a fully state owned entity, was set up with the aim of strengthening the national economy. The bank has implemented several projects to promote the small and medium enterprises sector, thus making a major contribution of the national economy.

Lankaputhra Develop-ment Bank successfully operates branches at Colombo, Hambantota, Polonnaruwa, Kegalle, Kandy, Wennappuwa and Batticaloa. The Management has drawn up plans to open a branch at Jaffna in the near future.
