Lankaputhra Development Bank (LDB) recently carried out their latest social service program at the Unagalawehera and Shanthipura regions. In order to combat the kidney ailments commonly found in these regions, LDB handed over water purification systems to the people of the area. These water purification systems will provide drinking water to 187 families for which they generally require about 4,000 to 5,000 litres of water on a daily basis. BUP_DFT_DFT-5-14

Drinking water samples from the Unagalawehera and Shanthipura regions were analysed by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and confirmed to be contaminated and therefore unsuitable for consumption. It has been revealed that the primary reason for the spreading of kidney disease in this region is the consumption of such contaminated water. Acting on a special request made by the Giritale Civic Environmental Society to provide a solution for this problem, LDB donated these water purification systems as a part of their social service programs.

As a bank setup to provide financial solutions to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME), LDB has always given priority to social service programs. The bank’s branch network is used to carry out such programs on a regular basis.

Several members of LDB’s senior management were present at the launch of the drinking water project at Unagalawehera recently. General Manager/CEO Lasantha Amarasekara, Deputy General Manager – Credit and Operations Ranjith Dissanayake, Manager Polonnaruwa Branch Rahula Senanayake as well as Giritale Civic Environmental Society Chairman T.M.P. Tennakoon, together with residents of the area, took part in this ceremony.

LDB operates successful branches in Colombo, Hambantota, Polonnaruwa, Kandy, Kegalle, Wennappuwa, Batticaloa and Trincomalee. The management is currently making plans to open LDB branches in the Tambuttegama and Bandarawela areas in the future. One of the key aspects of the expanding of the branch network is that the new branches will only be opened if a better service can be offered to customers in a particular district.

LDB provides attractive interest rates for savings and a high interest rate for senior citizens’ fixed deposits. In addition to this, the Bank also offers microfinance loans, interest-free payments, pawning services, ‘Sandaliya’ savings account for women and ‘Shasthree’ higher educational loan scheme specially designed for the benefit of students interested in pursuing Graduate, Post Graduate, Academic and Professional studies in locally and internationally-recognised educational institutes.
