Mannar villages receive Rs. 55 m school buildings & maternity ward

Two villages in Mannar have received new facilities valued at Rs 55. m (US $ 500,000) on 29 September, through UNICEF.

New buildings for Mn/Sinnapandivirichan Government Tamil Mixed School and a new maternity ward at Periyapandivirichchan Divisional Hospital were inaugurated together by Rishad Bathiudeen (Minister of Industry & Commerce of Sri Lanka), representatives of UNICEF and  Cathal Ryan Trust on 29 September.

These facilities were funded through UNICEF by the Cathal Ryan Trust. Cathal Ryan Trust is based in Ireland and aims to help some of the most vulnerable children in the country.



The new school will cater for pupils aged between six and 16 and accommodation has been built for teachers. The school has been built to child-friendly specifications, including the provision of safe water and separate toilets for girls and boys with access for the disabled. School furniture, teaching materials, books, playground equipment and teaching and learning materials have also been provided. The maternity ward will benefit an estimated population of almost 11,000 women and includes an antenatal unit with eight beds, a postnatal unit with eight beds, a labour room with two beds, preparation room, stores, doctors’ room, midwives’ room, and an examination room.
