MCB Bank joins hands with Pathma Group in noble cause

The Galle branch of one of the island’s prominent banks MCB Bank joined hands with Pathma Group of companies under the patronage of philanthropist Mohamed Wakheel, Chairman of the Group recently, presenting savings accounts to 50 high flyers of the grade 5 scholarship of Uswathun Hasana College – Katugoda, Galle. The minor savings accounts topped up with Rs. 1,000 each were presented to 45 students at a simple event last week amidst teachers, students and parents at the college premises where the top two performers were presented Rs. 12,000 and special gifts recognising their achievement. This is but the first step of a program that MCB Bank will be launching in a provincial level starting with the Southern Province, in which high performers will be complimented with a topped up minor savings account in their name. ‘Education is the one enabler you need to succeed in life and this endeavor was an attempt to reiterate that message in to these young ones’ minds’ said Wakheel at the event. MCB Bank Galle Branch Manager B.M. Wickramathilake said, “This is not just about CSR, this about instilling the value of education and the habit of savings in our children. These values need to be inculcated in them at a very young age. Afterall, they are the custodians of the future.” Also present at the event was Usawathun Hasana College principal Hussain who was pleased with the accomplishment of having so many students perform well at the years 5 scholarship exam. “Most of the students here come from poor families and education is the only way out of the trying conditions they grow up in. I am delighted that most of them are so focused in education and grateful that big corporates such as MCB Bank is paying attention to them,” he said.
