Milcris Ltd., a Sri Lankan construction consultancy operating in Sri Lanka and in the Sultanate of Oman, as a part of its corporate social responsibility program, reached out to those in need of assistance in the community to address an important issue – namely the silent non-communicable killer disease – diabetes. According to Milcris CEO Millan De Silva, the company’s corporate theme is ‘Relationships Beyond Measure’. “As construction consultants, everything tangible has a measure, except relationships built with people that go beyond all physical measure. Fundamental to the success of an organisation is the building and maintaining of excellent relationships with one’s employees, our valued clientele and the community we operate in. Strong relationships enable the organisational image to be enhanced and this consequently supports future business development.” Milcris, together with the largest service organisation in the world, the International Association of Lions Clubs, screened patients for diabetes at a health camp organised and conducted at St. Anne’s Church in Wattala by the Lions Club of Negombo, where Milcris provided the testing strips to facilitate the screening of patients. Over 120 patients were screened and approximately 80 detected with diabetes. Those tested positive were provided with proper medical advice for corrective action. Next to heart disease and high blood pressure, diabetes comes in at a close third as a killer disease.  In today’s fast paced world of rapid changes that place a heavy toll on one’s health and lifestyle, resulting in employees being glued to their seats and laptops, many do not realise that they may be living with the silent killer disease diabetes until tested and found positive. Timely testing and awareness can educate the victims to seek immediate relief through proper medication and a change in their lifestyle to minimise the effects of this disease. Milcris’s next CSR program will be based on sight first initiatives. “Paramount to leading a normal life is good sight. Diabetes too could impede one’s eyesight and even lead to blindness if left neglected. In this regard, an eye screening camp will be held mid-September at the Biyagama church and approximately 200 patients or more are expected to be screened. The screening of patients and provision of calibrated spectacles for those detected with sight deficiencies would be free of charge,” said Milcris Business Development Manager Terrence Wijesooriye. “Milcris is committed to reaching out to those in need in the community to improve their quality of life through humanitarian service initiatives. We have a significant budget allocated for CSR projects which will be implemented in Sri Lanka at regular intervals,” added Wijesooriye.
