By Ramona Nizar In a noble gesture to prevent a single maternal death during pregnancy from ever occurring in Sri Lanka in the future, JAT Holdings announced its pledge to be the principal sponsor of the estimated Rs. 30 million, state-of-the-art JAT Training and Simulation Centre to be set up under the auspices of the College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists of Sri Lanka (SLCOG.) The Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists state, that although Sri Lanka’s maternal mortality rate of 35 for every 100,000 live births (CIA World Fact Book) compared to most other developing nations is highly commendable, the country cannot rest on its laurels but must endeavour to reduce it to zero. An achievable goal when social conscious corporate structures such as JAT render financial support to visionary experts in the medical field such as the good doctors of SLCOG. Continuing in its support as part of its multifaceted corporate social responsibility projects, the ultimate goal of JAT together with (SLCOG) is not merely to reduce to zero the number of maternal deaths, but also to educate and empower those concerned in self-help methods and to prevent the destructive aftermath such deaths invariably leave in their wake; namely dispossessed children who are often abused and exploited, overburdened grandparents and more often than not absentee fathers. All of which combine to shred the social fabric of our society that has for centuries been deeply matriarchal. The new JAT Training and Simulation Centre equipped with the latest robotic mannequins from USA, that can mimic any complication that a pregnant mother can have will be set up at Model Farm Road, Colombo 8, under the guardianship of SLCOG President Prof. Hemantha Senanayake. Although SLCOG has been conducting Safe Motherhood Programs for a long time by sending teams to different areas to train midwives, nurses and doctors to provide care for pregnant women, the time has now come to set up a permanent base equipped with the best technology and expertise on offer to render a professional service coupled with empathy and sensitivity. It is envisaged that this will be a command centre with well coordinated management of emergency procedures to handle any and every situation that could arise. With the aim of generating awareness and funds for this gallant venture, a phenomenal fashion show unlike anything seen on our catwalks, produced and choreographed by Lou Ching Wong entitled the ‘JAT Spring Summer Fashion 2014’ was held on Sunday 24 November at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo. Lending their support to this worthy cause were 16 of our very own cricketers and some of Sri Lanka’s leading designers and models. The crickets past and present were the highlight of the show. JAT having launched its newest brand of decorative paints ‘Permoglaze’ at this show pledged to give back to the cause by donating Rs. 10 from every litre of Permoglaze Paint sold. JAT has confirmed that this will raise a further Rs. 30 million towards the cause.Generous donors may also send in their contributions in the form of a cheque drawn in favour of ‘Save the Mothers Fund’, Account No. 75303475 at the Bank of Ceylon, Regent Street Branch, Colombo 10. Cheques could be posted to the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, No. 112, Model Farm Road, Colombo 8, Sri Lanka.
