CBL recently completed six community projects under the ‘Munchee Samaga Gamata Sarana’ infrastructure development initiative. Through this initiative CBL has completed nearly 100 CSR projects throughout the island that directly benefited 83,765 people this year alone. These recent projects include a community centre in Deniyana which benefited 2,800 families; two schools in Morawaka and Badulla were provided with safe drinking water which benefited 650 students; the students of Kekirawa Nelliyagama Central received a new school stage to hold school concerts and assemblies; a state-of-the-art science lab was built for the 250 students of Pagaragammana Muslim Vidyalaya in Mahiyanganaya; and the 300 students of Deegawapiya Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya received a modern school library. The Munchee Samaga Gamata Sarana infrastructure development project addresses the community needs of rural Sri Lanka and works jointly with the direct beneficiaries of the project. Under this initiative, Munchee has provided drinking water to communities that lacked safe drinking water. Munchee has also been instrumental in constructing roads, bridges and community centres for those who were inconvenienced by the lack of basic infrastructure facilities. Through the Gamata Sarana program Munchee has provided study centres, libraries, computer and science laboratories which contribute to the intellectual development of the next generation. “We are a company that contributes towards the community because we believe business is not only about profit but also helping our community grow,” said Group Director and Head of Marketing and Sales Nandana Wickramage. “42% of our projects have been school based and 29% were to provide clean drinking water. These may seem like simple things but they make a world of difference to the people in the communities we help.” To address the needs of the community CBL’s field sales staff, which amount to around 500, regularly interact with local community leaders to identify potential projects. After careful consideration five projects are chosen each month for execution. CBL works closely with all relevant stakeholders to complete its projects as community participation is an integral part of its CSR initiatives. This participation leads to a sense of community ownership and greater appreciation of the project benefits. CBL works together with many rural communities throughout Sri Lanka. As a responsible business entity, they believe in sharing their growth and giving back to the communities through CSR initiatives that cater to the welfare of the most needy. Helping the sustainable growth of these communities is a duty that CBL takes seriously. CBL strives to go beyond the required norm to make a positive impact on Sri Lankan society. Since 2008, CBL has conducted CRS initiatives that are focused on creating value for the local communities. CBL carries out a range of CSR initiates which include sustainable infrastructure projects that benefit entire communities. Munchee has won the SLIM CSR Brand of the Year award on three occasions, for which Munchee’s Samaga Gamata Sarana program has been a major contributor. In 2013 the program received the JESTICA Silver Award presented to the best Community Service project. The program has also been recognised as the best infrastructure project at the Best Corporate Citizen Awards twice.
