National Savings Bank extends support for success of Year 5 students

The National Savings Bank, the proud inheritor of a rich saving tradition, comes to the forefront to focus on the facilitation of the educational needs of the children while inculcating the habit of thrift in the nation. The bank expects to conduct over 170 free scholarship seminars for the year five students both in Sinhala and Tamil mediums. Thus we have conducted over 1000 free scholarships seminars for the past 13 years. The Hapan Scholarship seminars mainly focus on preparation for the year five scholarship examination and it is filled with entertainments, psychological sessions for stress relief which is highly effective. The seminars are conducted by a senior qualified group of teachers. Children who are above seven years of age can open and operate Hapan Accounts by themselves whereas on behalf of the children below seven years of age Punchi Hapan Children’s Savings Account can be opened by their parents or guardians. The Hapan Children’s Savings Account holders are entitled to 1% more interest than the ordinary savings which is a much higher rate compared to many other minor savings accounts.The account holders who maintain a minimum balance of Rs. 2,500 prior to their scholarship examination are also eligible for the “Grade Five Scholarship Awards”. Who score good marks among the top 15 students in each district will receive special cash prizes along with a Hapan medal, while others who obtain merit results at the examination will receive a token gift from their respective NSB branch. Account holders are also eligible for an attractive gift scheme based on their account balances, and deposits. Furthermore, they can stand a chance to win laptops, high speed dongles, LCD TVs, DVD players or cash prizes of Rs. 50,000, Rs. 100,000 and Rs. 200,000. Accordingly over the past few years many children have been lucky enough to receive the benefits of these gifts. The account holders are also entitled to a gratuity payment up to Rs. 1 million.
