The National Blood Transfusion Service of Sri Lanka has been in existence since 1960 and has contributed immensely towards saving lives. In 1967 the service introduced the Red Donor Book that was given to all donors so that they could maintain a record of their voluntary donations, which would in turn be invaluable in the event the donors themselves required blood transfusion.

This Red Book although serving a valuable purpose, over the years, became cumbersome.  It was not convenient for the busy lifestyles of today’s generation.

It was at this juncture that Nations Trust Bank (NTB) joined hands with the National Blood Transfusion Service in order to issue personalised donor cards in 2011. These donor cards were issued at four different levels depending on the level of donor activity starting at Red and escalating in stages to Platinum via Silver and Gold. This step not only paved the way for a convenient and recognised method of acknowledging donor service but also offered an innovative management system for the service as well as donors. This year too NTB is continuing to issue these donor cards and in addition to participating in the Donor Day celebrations.

As always NTB is committed not only to the financial and economic growth of Sri Lanka, but also to its cultural and social development. The Bank contributed further by encouraging its employees to volunteer for the donation of blood on 25 May under the initiative of its sports and welfare society.

With over three hundred thousand pints of blood used each year in Sri Lanka, the need for voluntary donors is high and increasing. Recognising the noble service that they render and affording them a hassle free method to maintain a record of their contribution is what NTB has strived to provide through the donor cards system.

Commenting NTB CEO Saliya Rajakaruna tated, “NTB is honoured to contribute towards this project because just as NTB takes pride in pioneering innovative financial solutions, it also strives to stay abreast of the changing social needs of modern Sri Lanka. In addition we are pleased to partner and play our role in celebrating the Donor Day with the National Blood Transfusion Service of Sri Lanka.”

NTB, one of the fastest growing banks in the country that pioneered 365 day banking in Sri Lanka with its market positioning of being the benchmark of banking convenience is now ably supported by a host of financial services and products that cater to the needs of the individual, corporate and institutional clients. The Bank now has 51 branches, 27 Leasing Centres and is the sole issuer and acquirer for American Express® Cards in Sri Lanka.
