Recognising the significance for social intervention, PLC places a commitment for education related social responsibility initiatives in its ‘five pillared framework’ and carries initiatives to improve the infrastructure enabling to deliver quality education.

In order to achieve the above objectives, PLC Chilaw constructed two classrooms for A/L class students of Ariyagama Siddhartha Vidyalaya, Chilaw. Ariyagama Siddhartha Vidyalaya, Chilaw is situated 8 km away from the Chilaw town. There are 352 students and 23 teachers at the school.

Previously, advanced level classes were conducted in a cadjan thatched temporarily wattle and daub enclosure made by students themselves in the absence of a proper classroom building. Witnessing hardships faced by the students the former Head of Chilaw branch Nalin de Silva spearheaded this initiative. Ably led by Keshika Karunarathne, the present Head of Chilaw branch, and his team, the ‘warichchi’ classroom was transformed into a permanent classroom building with new chairs and tables, thanks to 133 volunteer hours dedicated by 19 staff members of PLC Chilaw to manage the initiative.

Official handing over of the two classrooms for the students was held recently by DGM – Operations Lionel Fernando and the management and staff of PLC. The Deputy Director Education of Zonal Education Office – Chilaw, former and present principals of Ariyagama Siddhartha Vidyalaya, Chilaw also graced the occasion.

“Ariyagama Siddhartha Vidyalaya, Chilaw is a low attention receiving school in this area. Previously, we didn’t have a proper building to conduct advanced level classes and 80 numbers of advanced level students were studying in the ‘warichchi’ classroom. Despite this, we could achieve 100% and 80% advanced level results in 2012 and 2013 respectively. We appreciate the generosity of PLC in providing two new classrooms with furniture. I would like to express my gratitude, especially for the Head of PLC Chilaw and all the staff on behalf of my school,” said Ariyagama Siddhartha Vidyalaya, Chilaw Principal C.B.A.M.S. Wijeratne.
