The Nuwara Eliya branch of People’s Leasing & Finance PLC hosted their annual polythene collection program for the 7th consecutive year on 14 February 2014, full moon Poya day.
All staff of the Nuwara Eliya branch volunteered in this eco friendly initiative where 500 cloth bags were distributed among pilgrims who scaled the peak, in exchange for their polythene carrier bags.
Polythene scattered along the Hatton route were collected and brought down for disposal. Planting of “Na” (Mesua nagasarium) saplings in the vicinity of the Sama Vihara also took place. Further, PLC fixed the second 1,000 litre capacity drinking water tank near Indikatupahana whereas the first tank was installed at the starting point of Mahagiridamba last year.
Staff from PLC Hatton and People’s Bank also participated in this environmentally friendly initiative. Banners were also displayed with environmental message on preserving the bio diversity value of sacred mountain through reducing polythene use to educate the pilgrims.
