School children in Mutur now cycle to school

  Berendina Development Services (BDS) donated bicycles to needy school children in the Mutur area of Trincomalee district at a ceremony held at Al Mina Maha Vidyalayam, Periyapalam, Mutur recently. Mutur Divisional Secretary A. Yoosuf, Additional Divisional Secretary A. Thahir, Zonal Director of Education Akila Kanagasooriyam, Eastern Province Dept. of Social Services Asst. Director K. Kandeepan and Mutur Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman A.H. Haris participated at the handing over ceremony. Trincomalee District BDS Manager Vijinthan Shanmugalingam was also present at the event. The donation was made following a request made by the DS office to assist children from low income families in remote areas of Mutur who are facing immense difficulties in travelling to school due to long distances and poor public transport facilities. Berendina identified the 43 school children, consisting of 27 girls and 16 boys from nine schools in the Mutur area based on good educational performance at their respective schools and low family income who faced this problem. Many of these children were also from recently resettled families. The school children were identified from the villages of Paddithidal, Manalchenai, Kanguveli, Munnampodiveddai, Kanguveli, Kaddaiparichchan, Arafanagar, Jabalnagar, Safinagar, Alimchenai, Nalloor, Illankanthai, Seethanaveli, Ralkuly, Koonitivu and Soodaikuda in the Mutur DS.
