Solid Waste Management Unit for Sir John Kotelawala Defence University

A solid waste management unit constructed by ‘Pilisaru’ national solid waste management project operating under the Central Environmental Authority for General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University was declared open by Charitha Herath, Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) yesterday at Sir John Kotelawala Defence University premises, Ratmalana.  

The ‘Pilisaru’ national solid waste management project is operating under the CEA to make a waste free Sri Lanka at 2012. In order to provide sustainable solution for solid waste management problem, ‘Pilisaru’ is working with the local authorities and other institutions all over the island.



The solid waste management unit of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University is another progressive step of this enormous programme. With the construction of this composting yard, Kotelawala Defence University is enabled to recycle its kitchen and perishable garden waste within its premises for its own usage.

Over Rs. 1 million has been expended by the ‘Pilisaru’ project for the construction of this composting yard and all the technical support and financial support for operating the project will be given by the ‘Pilisaru’ national solid waste management project.

Herath said that as the main regulatory body of the environment in Sri Lanka, it is a duty of a CEA to be involved in solid waste management. Due to this, ‘Pilisaru’ national solid waste management is working with local authorities and other institutions under the planned procedure to overcome the solid waste problem within Sri Lanka.

In order to solve the solid waste problem within Sri Lanka, ‘Pilisaru’ will provide financial and technical support to local authorities and other institutions all over the island. The CEA will actively participate in creating a ‘green’ Sri Lanka, according to the ‘Mahinda Chinthana’.
