Telijjawila Central College receives 60th IT lab donated by Commercial Bank

The Commercial Bank of Ceylon has donated a fully-equipped and furnished computer laboratory to the Telijjawila Central School in the Matara District under the bank’s national-scale community initiative to promote IT education.

The donation, the 60th of its kind by the bank, will benefit the school’s 2,850 students, the bank said. More than 30,000 students country-wide have been provided facilities for IT education under this program to date.

The donated computer laboratory was formally opened by K.G.D.D. Dheerasinghe – Deputy Chairman of Commercial Bank in the presence of representatives of the corporate management of the bank.

The Telijjawila Central College traces its history to a humble thatched building at the Telijjawila junction which commenced operation in January 1946 with 200 students and three teachers. The school was moved to its present location in July 1955 with the ceremonial opening of its building by the Sir John Kotelawala who was Prime Minister at the time. Many eminent Sri Lankans have received their education at the school.

“This is a school that has a long and distinguished history and an institution that has provided education to many thousands of students over the years,” said Ravi Dias, Managing Director and CEO of Commercial Bank. “It is a privilege for Commercial Bank to support such an institution.”

All schools that receive computer laboratories from the Commercial Bank are also provided assistance from the bank to maintain and upgrade their computer labs when necessary to ensure that the facilities benefit many batches of students.

These donations are funded by Commercial Bank’s CSR Trust which assists the bank to identify national priorities and deliver a structured response to the needs of the community.

Commercial Bank has chosen IT education as its primary sphere of community activity because it believes the subject is crucial to ensuring the growth and future of Sri Lankan society, Dias added.

The largest private bank in Sri Lanka, Commercial Bank is the only Sri Lankan bank to be listed two years consecutively in the world’s Top 1000 Banks. The bank operates a network of 224 service points in Sri Lanka and a network of 541 ATMs.

The bank has been adjudged ‘Best Bank in Sri Lanka’ for 14 consecutive years by ‘Global Finance’ Magazine, and has won multiple awards as the country’s best bank from ‘The Banker,’ ‘FinanceAsia,’ ‘Euromoney’ and ‘Trade Finance’ magazines.
