Union Bank awards Piyawara art competition winners

Union Bank conducted the first phase of the ‘Piyawara’ art competition in Gampaha in 2012 with the objective of harnessing hidden creativity and talents of children. The art competition received an overwhelming response and enabled children of three age categories to take part and send in their entries under the given themes.

The winners received 25,000, 15,000 and 10,000 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively for all categories. In addition, in supporting the schools to further develop children’s talents and knowledge Union Bank also offered the winners schools a donation of Rs. 10,000 towards the development of the school libraries.

The prize awarding ceremony was held on 28 February 2013 at the Union Bank Gampaha branch and the winners received their prizes and certificates from Nilanth De Silva, Chief Operating Officer of Union Bank.

First place of the age category 3-6 years was won by Ashvinda Jayathilake of Sumeda Viyalaya Gampaha, 1st place of the age category 6-10 years was won by Kimuthu Kulathilaka JES Int’l Art School and 1st of age category 11-15 years was won by Nethmi Shanuki Silva of Holy Cross College Gampaha. The school principals were present to accept the donation to the winning schools.

The art competition was an initiative carried out through the bank’s Piyawara Minor Savings account to create awareness and inculcate the habit of savings from a younger age. All participants had to open a Piyawara account to take part.

‘Piyawara’ and ‘Punchi Pathum,’ the bank’s two minor savings accounts, currently pay the highest interest rate of 10 p.a. for minor savings and in addition ‘Punchi Pathum’ offers unique benefits and flexibility of withdrawing funds for the best interest of the child before the child turns 18 years.
