VirtusaPolaris, the market-facing brand of Virtusa Corporation and Polaris Consulting and Services, Ltd. and a leading worldwide provider of information technology (IT) consulting and outsourcing services, joined hands with Asiri Hospitals Holdings PLC to conduct a two-day health camp for flood victims in Kotikawatta area, one of the worst affected suburbs by the recent floods in Colombo.

As a continued effort by VirtusaPolaris to provide aid to those displaced and affected by the crisis, a flood relief and medical camp was conducted in collaboration with Asiri Hospitals Holdings PLC, at the Kotikawatta Somawathie  Balika Vidyalaya, on 1 and 2 June. The camp was able to reach out and help approximately 1,500 flood affected people in the area, in terms of medical assistance and relief material.

Asiri Hospitals deployed a team of 10 doctors and nurses including a paediatric specialist while volunteers from VirtusaPolaris extended their tireless assistance to organise and conduct the two-day camp; and distributed essential items donated by Virtusa Polaris team members to the flood victims in the area.

“At VirtusaPolaris, we emphasise on giving back to the community and being socially responsible,” said VirtusaPolaris Senior Director Human Resources Chandi Dharmaratne. “Our team members have always stepped up to help the community during times of disaster and crisis irrespective of the region or scale. They have extended their assistance not only through donations but by voluntarily leveraging their IT knowledge and expertise to design and develop disaster management systems and applications some of which are being used across the globe.

She added, “We are happy to have embarked on this initiative with Asiri Hospitals PLC through which we were able to provide relief and aid to thousands of people. As they now make the strenuous way back to normalcy we want to ease the burden of that journey as much as possible.”

Asiri Group of Hospitals Chief Executive Officer Dr. Manjula Karunaratne said, “As a leader in healthcare, we believe it is our duty to serve the community especially at the time of a natural disaster. Our main aim is to help the people in the area restore their day to day life.”

“Having assessed the area of Kotikawatta, following the devastating floods, we realised there is a dire need of medical assistance due to the high density of the population in the area. During the health camp together with VirtusaPolaris, we intended to examine the health conditions of those affected by the floods and provide medication and treatment for those diagnosed,” he added.

Situated east of Colombo city, Kotikawatta is a fast developing residential and commercial suburb and was among the worst affected areas by the recent unprecedented rainfall and devastating floods in Sri Lanka with the highest number of people displaced and affected.
