Yasmin, a popular name in women’s contraception, celebrated the completion of its third successful year in the Sri Lankan market by hosting a forum to promote women’s health and wellbeing.

Attended by the members of the Sri Lanka College of General Practitioners – North Western chapter, the event focused on the advantages of using contraceptives and the health and societal benefits associated with regular use of contraceptives.

This forum is the first of many planned for General Practitioners by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, the owners of Yasmin brand, with the objective of informing General Practitioners around the Island about the importance of using proper contraceptives and associated health and social benefits.  Introduced to the Sri Lankan market in 2008, Yasmin, an Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP) has been recognised world-wide for its unique formula and reduced adverse effects usually associated with contraceptive pills. Dr. Sanath Lanerolle, well-known Obstetrician and Gynaecologist conducted the presentation for the members of the Sri Lanka College of General Practitioners – North Western chapter focusing on the importance of maintaining mind, body and spiritual health through all facets of one’s life.  He further elaborated on the importance of contraception in a modern woman’s life to ensure that these facets are well looked after. “The current generation of OCPs like Yasmin, with Drospirenone, significantly reduces side effects and takes a step towards the ideal contraceptive. Promoting contraception amongst women in Sri Lanka, particularly in the less urban areas is definitely something that can be beneficial.  Medical and technological advances in science has resulted in numerous ways through which contraceptives can be utilised, and benefits – not just in terms of giving women some control and independence over their reproductive capabilities but also in terms of reducing ovarian and cervical cancer, regulating their menstrual cycle and other such health advantages - are numerous,” stated Dr. Lanerolle.  Dr. Lanerolle also emphasised the importance of creating awareness of good contraception practices in Sri Lanka and how a General Practitioner could partner in promoting this cause effectively to avoid unplanned pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and the risks associated, both medical and social, with them for the women involved. Produced by world renowned Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals and distributed locally by Hemas Pharmaceuticals, YASMIN is the most recently launched Oral Contraceptive Pill  (OCP) available to Sri Lankan women.
