India institutes Gold medals for Ruhuna Uni Pharmacy, Nursing and Medical Lab Sciences students

At a meeting between High Commissioner of India Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Vice Chancellor of University of Ruhuna, Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena, it was decided that the High Commission of India in Colombo would institute annual Gold medals for the best performing students in the Bsc courses in the field of Pharmacy, Nursing and Medical Laboratory Sciences in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences in University of Ruhuna.

Cooperation in the field of education is an important pillar of bilateral relation between India and Sri Lanka. High Commission of India has also constructed the largest University auditorium in Sri Lanka within the Ruhuna University premises. Construction and renovation of many school buildings is also being undertaken under Indian grant assistance, while a tri-lingual school is also under construction in North Central Province in Polonnaruwa District. The Government of India had also assisted Faculty of Agriculture and Engineering in Kilinochchi campus of Jaffna University with equipment and skill components.

Additionally India offers 750 scholarships annually to the Sri Lankan students to study for Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral studies in India and Sri Lanka. Entrance to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology, which are the breeding ground for global CEOs are now held in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan students can also apply for admission to medical colleges in India.

Recently, speaking at the annual Research Congress, RESCON 2019, in University of Peradeniya, High Commissioner of India Taranjit Singh Sandhu had noted that both India and Sri Lanka come from a rich tradition where acquisition of knowledge was considered the supreme goal in life; where knowledge and wisdom were cherished and scholars were most respected. The institutionalisation of this Gold medal is another step to carry forward this said tradition.
