Room to Read partners with Maiden Factor in global collaborative Girls’ Education Program

On 5 September, Room to Read CEO Geetha Murali and Girls’ Education Program graduate from Sri Lanka Thirumagal attended a private event at HMS President to mark their partnership with Maiden Factor.

The Maiden is a yacht that made history in 1990 by carrying the first all-female crew to complete the Whitbread Round the World Race. This past year, Maiden has undergone extensive refurbishment to get her ready and back in the water, thanks to the generous support of HRH Princess Haya Al Bint Hussein.

Maiden will embark on a new mission to empower and educate girls around the world, supporting six partner charities, including Room to Read – a leading non-profit focused on girls’ education and children’s literacy in Asia and Africa.

Geetha and Thirumagal were joined by Room to Read Global Chair John Ridding to see Maiden before she sets off on a three-year global tour. They also metCharles, Prince of Wales,andCamilla,Duchess of Cornwall, at the launch, who attended by invitation of Princess Haya Al Bint Hussein.

Thirumagal graduated from the program in 2015 and is currently reading for her Bachelor’s Degree in Geography at the University of Jaffna. Thirumagal is the first in her family to not only graduate from high school but also attend university.
