This year, many students of Stafford International School (SIS) have been offered places in top ranked universities in the world. Academic Director Suvin Wettimuny, speaking on behalf of the school, stated: “We are proud of their achievements as they have consistently worked towards their goals pushing themselves beyond their comfort zone.”
All-rounder, SIS Deputy Head Prefect Shan Gunasekera secured a place at the prestigious Yale University and will be commencing his degree majoring in Economics and Philosophy this year.
“This is a significant achievement because only a handful from South East Asia get this opportunity every year!” asserted Wettimuny.
In fact, the acceptance rate last year was just 6.3% and is one of the lowest in the world. Being one of three of the oldest universities in the United States, the private Ivy League Research University is considered one of the best universities in the world.
Gunasekera, who was also offered places in Dartmouth, Cornell, UC Berkeley and UCL, had won many academic accolades including ‘Top in country’ for Business Studies, IT, and ‘Best Across 5’ subjects at the Cambridge Learner awards.
“It was his sound extra-curricular profile in combination with the innovative and risky essays that he wrote for his application that won him a place in the prestigious Yale University,” said Wettimuny. Another student who has been able to secure a place in a top ranked university is SIS Head Prefect Ashvin Arasakularatne. Wettimuny stated that the Head Prefect was offered a 50% Merit Scholarship from New York University and has had offers from UCL and UPenn but prefers to attend Imperial College, London later this year.
Ashvin is not just academically sound. Earlier this year, he played the lead in this year’s senior school production ‘A Doll’s House’. He was also the Captain of the SIS debating team and has represented the school in many tournaments.
Additionally, the school is proud of Dayan Perera who won a place at NYU Shanghai with a 50% scholarship, Rochelle Fernando who will be attending IMU Malaysia for Medicine and Chaneth Wickramapala for Mathematics at Durhan University – one of the best universities for Math in the UK.
“At Stafford we know the ins and outs of the university admissions process and we have put together an application strategy tailored for each individual student. Being a small school we can provide an individual university entrance strategy which includes SAT tutoring, essay prep with students on various essay topics, and take our students through the steps to apply for college,” stated Wettimuny.
In order to gain entrance to top universities strong academics and an impressive extra-curricular profile is of paramount importance. Stafford International School continues to impress by being able to produce students who can separate themselves from some of the world’s best students, and compete for a limited number of spaces in top ranked universities in the world.
