The Government is committed to strengthen the free education system and will act according to a comprehensive strategy to resolve the issues that have arisen in the field of university education in the country, President Maithripala Sirisena said. Participating in the Convocation of the Uva- Wellassa University held at the BMICH, Thursday (02), the President pointed out that even though many criticisms were leveled against the country’s free education policy as well as for its procedures, Sri Lanka has better quality education compared to the developed countries in the world. The President further said that every government had made a commitment to provide necessary resources to strengthen the free education system and to resolve issues in the field of education. “We can be happy about the benefits we received through the free education system of our country,” he said. He noted that the increased number of intellectuals are a strength to the country and added that it is essential to learn from the development achieved by other countries when preparing policies. “The people of a country should be rich with knowledge and intelligence to conquer the modern world which moves forward with high technology,” the President said, adding that it is the responsibility of the education system to deliver the essential knowledge to the younger generation and equip them with self-reliance in decision making in a democratic environment. The President at the Convocation awarded degrees to 52 graduates among the 450 conferred with degrees. The Chancellor of Uva Wellassa University, most venerable Bengamuwe Sri Dammadinna Nayake Thero presented a memento to the President to mark his visit to the convocation. Minister of University Education and Highways Lakshman Kiriella, State Minister o f University Education Mohan Lal Grero, Vice Chancellor of Uva Wellassa University, Professor G. Chandrasena, Deans and lecturers participated in this event.
