The South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) held its fourth convocation duly recognising its graduates from the first and second MBBS batches of the Medical Faculty and the graduates from the Faculty of ICT and Media and the Faculty of Management and Finance, at the BM ICH in Colombo, on Tuesday (15). The Chief Guest at the SAITM Convocation 2016 was distinguished Professor Sir Sabarathnam Arulkumaran, past President of British Medical Association, I n t e r national Federat i o n o f Obstetricians and Gynaecologists ( F I GO) , Ro ya l C o l l e g e o f Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, St George’s University of London, UK. He was appointed Knight Bachelor by Her Majesty, in June 2009, in recognition of his services to Medicine and Healthcare UK.
Among the Guests of Honour, were State Minister of Higher Education Mohanlal Grero and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Sri Lanka and Maldives Alexander A. Karchava. SAITM established in 2009 and conferred as a Degree Awarding Institute in 2011, is recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC). SAITM presently has five faculties – Medicine, Engineering, Management and Finance, and ICT and Media and Allied Health and Behavioural Sciences. One of the largest multifaculty higher education institutes in the country, SAITM offers degree programs approved by the UGC and the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE). Currently over 1,000 students are enrolled in all its faculties. Additionally, more than 400 students have graduated from SAITM in engineering and other fields, who are now well employed in Sri Lanka and overseas. SAITM boasts of a prestigious academic panel comprising of 20 eminent professors, 74 distinguished senior lecturers and 54 lecturers apart from the 38 visiting professors from the Russian Federation. Winning the Gold Medals for Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry and the Best Overall Results in MBBS Batch 01, was Dr. Shane Halpe, who set the benchmark for the undergraduate medical students.
Dr. Nawami Samaranayake further raised the bar by winning the Gold Medals for Surgery, Paediatrics and Psychiatry and the Best Overall Results in MBBS Batch 02. Showing exemplary standards, Gayani Ganegoda and Gishani Perera were the gold medal recipients for overall best performance in Computing with Interactive Media and Accounting and Finance respectively, awarded in affiliation with Buckinghamshire New University, of United Kingdom. SAITM wishes all its graduates a bright and prosperous future
