The highly-anticipated Big Bad Wolf Book Sale is ready to set paws in Colombo for the third consecutive year as the team officially announced its return, to Colombo, Sri Lanka at an exclusive media event held at Elevate, Access Towers, recently.
With 50% to 90% off recommended retail price on all English books, the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale has stood out as the world’s biggest book sale and is slated to commence in Colombo at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC) from 18 to 28 October. The sale will open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and operate 24 hours non-stop over the weekends. Starting from 10 a.m. on Friday and ending at 10 p.m. on Sunday with over 1.5 million books up for grab, entrance to the sale is free!
The press conference saw the attendance of Big Bad Wolf Books Founder Jacqueline Ng, Big Bad Wolf Books Sri Lanka Partner Dipak Madhavan, and ProRead Lanka Ltd. Director and Big Bad Wolf Books Sri Lanka Partner Nishan Wasalathanthri. The sale is supported and endorsed by the Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka and the event partner for the sale includes Sampath Bank as the official banking partner while Mobitel comes in as the official mobile communication partner and YouCab as the mobility partner.
“We started traveling around the world in 2016 and our main mission is to instil the reading habit by providing readers access to affordable quality books. Books have the power to inspire and empower people with knowledge and we are providing the platform through the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale. In the past decade, we have seen many young readers who have bought their first English book at the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale and they have now developed into well-read young folks. The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale has earned a loyal following across the world being a reading advocacy organisation and we are delighted to bring the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale back to Colombo for the third time with a wider range of books and brand-new titles,” said Jacqueline Ng during the press conference.
Speaking at the event was also Nishan Wasalathanthri who said, “For both the previous sales that took place, we managed to pull off two incredible events due to the absolute fervour and eagerness of Sri Lankan readers. This year again, we invite people of all ages to visit the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale as it has something new and exciting to offer to every individual.”
A highlight of this year’s sale will be the Magical Books titles or also known as the Augmented Reality (AR) Books for children. A preschool learning series and bedtime stories that use cutting-edge technology to revolutionise reading for the next generation, allowing children to sing, learn and read. Parents can discover popular titles such as ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Lets Learn Alphabet ABC’ among the 13 titles to be rolled out during the sale this year. Suitable for children from one to five years old, Magical Books create an immersive and interactive reading experience.
Held in June last year, the sale is returning with a bang this October much to the anticipation of eager readers. Readers can expect to find over 1.5 million new English books, ranging from fiction, bestsellers, literature, non-fiction, business books, cookbooks, art and design, coffee table books and more, discounted up at 50%-90% off recommended retail prices. All generations of people can find their reading preference within the sale and be transported into the sheer diversity of titles and genres.
Moreover, the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale is the ultimate chance for a book collector to obtain rare and limited-edition titles. Parents can also expect an extensive collection of children’s books, including bedtime stories, colouring and activity books, educational books and interactive books.
Staying true to make books accessible to everyone including the underprivileged Big Bad Wolf Books also believes in giving back to the community and through its CSR arm, Red Readerhood (RRH), The Sale will be collaborating with the Centre of Hope. “This time around, we are collaborating with the Centre of Hope, a charity organisation that operates a care home and educational centre at four main districts such as Ampara, Batticaloa, Colombo and Mullaitivu as we are hoping to make a difference by helping to uplift educational opportunities in Sri Lanka. The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale would be kick-starting this initiative by pledging 500 books and visitors can purchase and donate books towards this worthy cause during the sale at the designated area,” Ng shared.
As an additional perquisite, selected invitees will have the chance to attend a special preview of the sale on 17 October from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., a day before it opens to the public. The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale 2019 in Colombo is expected to be even more exciting and dynamic and is set to become an annual event for book lovers in Sri Lanka. The Ministry of Education backs this grand spectacle for all readers in Sri Lanka, as its endgame is to help raise the readership count as well as English proficiency by making good books affordable and accessible whilst helping establish the importance of developing English skills as a whole through reading.
