The book launch ceremony of Rajasinghe Bandara, about the students struggle (during the Sirimavo Bandaranaike regime) in 1975-76, which led to a bloodbath at Peradeniya University, killing a student, Uhumiye W.M. Weerasooriya, and injuring more than 200 students, will be held on 1August at the Mahaweli Centre Auditorium from 3 to 6:30 p.m.
The well-known, prominent academic and diplomat Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka, and the former Election Commissioner and the first Chairman of the Election Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya will deliver key speeches. The former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya will be attend as the Chief Guest.
The author of the book Rajasinghe Bandara, Dayan Jayatileke and Mahinda Deshapriya were former students of Peradeniya University and the active participants of the protests against the tyranny of the University President Professor P.W. Vithanage and the Prime-minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike.
The theme of the book launch is how dictatorship rules from the eras of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike and J.R. Jayewardene brought the country to the current situation where people experience severe economic hardships, crimes and corruptions, as a result of loss of democracy and rule of law.
The purpose of the event is to educate the public, about the lessons they can learn from the past, during this critical time that our country is going for another Presidential election.
The author Rajasinghe Bandara has decided to donate every single penny of the profit for the welfare of Peradeniya University’s students. The book has been priced at Rs. 1000 and available to buy at the ceremony with a 10% discount.
