In a groundbreaking move, the British Council has announced the unprecedented expansion of National Theatre Live (NTLive) screenings to three new locations in Sri Lanka: Gampaha, Kandy, and Matara.

This initiative is part of the British Council’s 75th anniversary celebrations, bringing world-class stage performances from the UK to audiences across the island.

In celebration of its 75th anniversary, the British Council proudly announces a historic NTLive screening of Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch. This special event marks the first-ever NTLive screening in Gampaha, Kandy, and Matara, bringing world-class theatre to new audiences in Sri Lanka.

Brought in partnership with Ceylon Theatres, Hamlet, one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays, comes directly from the Barbican stage in London to Sri Lanka.

An Academy Award nominee, Benedict Cumberbatch is an award-winning English actor known for his versatile performances on stage and screen for roles such as Sherlock Holmes, The Imitation Game, Doctor Strange, and Hamlet.

Directed by Lyndsey Turner (Posh, Chimerica), this production has been seen by over 900,000 people worldwide and is hailed as one of the most visually and atmospherically stunning productions ever.

NTLive broadcasts to over 700 cinemas across the UK and to an audience of more than 11 million people across 65 countries.
