Dance group from Kandy participates in National Tribal Dance Festival in India

A 12-member dance group led by Umah Sritharan, Director of Sri Sathya Sai Kalalayam (Dancing Institution) from Kandy, participated in the National Tribal Dance Festival – 2019 held in Chhattisgarh state of India. 

The group mesmerised the audience by showcasing various forms of indigenous dances of Sri Lanka. The dance festival was held for three days from 27-29 December 2019. On the first day 27 December 2019, they performed Pot dance and Harvest dance. The next day, they performed the Raban dance and Sword dance, and on the third and final day, they performed the Peacock dance.

The dance group was sponsored by the Government of the State of Chhattisgarh and the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR). The group also met with Chief Minister of the State of Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel who awarded the group with certificates and memento for the event. Over 1,200 participants from 80 dance groups from all states of India, and from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Belarus, Thailand and Uganda performed at the National Tribal Dance Festival – 2019.
