Artist Prasad Abu Bakr

The art of “Collage” is nothing new to local or international artists. But the difference in what Abu Bakr is doing is that he blends his photographs with the rest of the artist’s material he uses to create a picture, which many observers of his work have claimed makes a marked difference from many other creative works done by other artists.

Prasad Abu Bakr was groomed to be an artist at the age of sixteen by the famous Cora Abraham at her then-famous Melbourne Art Classes down Dickmans Road during the early seventies (re-branded as the Cora Abraham Art Classes at present). However, it was not until 1995 that Abu Bakr was tempted to have his first ever one-man art exhibition at the Lionel Wendt Art Centre, though his first appearance as an artist was exhibiting beside famous artistes at an early age – one such incident is showing his work at the “Kalagaraya” opened at the Alliance Francaise de Ceylan premises down Ward Place in Colombo during the early seventies.

However, following his 1995 first one-man show at the Wendt immediately after which he joined the Media fraternity in which he dabbled for the next twenty years. The field of journalism opened up an opportunity for Abu Bakr to play around with the camera opening-up new vistas for him to use alongside his writings in his work as a scribe and later in his own publication that was opened upon his retirement in 2007. During those ten years between 1997 and 2007 Abu Bakr exhibited his work in both spheres many times either as a painter or as a photographer but it was only in 2016 that Abu Bakr began his journey as a “Collage artist” launching his many dazzling images at a solo exhibition presented by the Alliance Francaise de Colombo and again in 2017 at the Alliance Francaise de Kandy – both that paved the way for the full time Collage artist to show his work at the Galle Literary Festival and the famous Kala Pola held annually in Colombo and a couple of other artistic events held in the country.

Abu Bakr is moving forward as a Collage artist this year planning to show his work at a couple of exhibitions due to open in Colombo, Galle and Kandy.
