It is often said that doctors are a very serious group of people, with medicine being the be all and end all of their calling. It is of course definitely true to say that their vocational mission is of vital importance to the community at large. Doctoring is generally considered to be a noble task and many of the exponents of this vocation of a conglomerate of art and science are experts in their own specialities.

Yet for all that, many of them also have other aptitudes that are perhaps far removed from their selected profession. Some of them are acclaimed theatrical performers in song, dance, drama and performing arts. In cognizance of the undoubted talent around, the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) offers an opportunity for these arty men and women to showcase their talents and skills in culture and art at the ‘SLMA Doctors’ Concert’ scheduled to be held during its Annual International Scientific Congress. This year it will be in the evening of Saturday 27 July from 7 p.m. onwards at the Grand Ballroom of Hotel Galadari.

The event in 2019 will include a number of songs in Sinhala and English, musical medleys, a couple of dramatic parodies and an exquisite dance item. The event will finish off with the grand finale of a patriotic song presented as a harmonised choral item by the entire Executive Council of the SLMA. The entire programme contains a remarkable assortment of enchanting oldies, contemporary pop, stage acts and many other outstanding musical components. All the details are not listed here in view of the restraints on space.

This entire venture is a very definite prospect for members of the medical profession and their family members to relax, put their hair down and forget medicine, at least for that evening. The ‘SLMA Doctors’ Concert’ has a most pleasing legacy of being presented yearly for quite a while. The standards of the routines and acts presented have shown a vastly progressive escalation in the levels of absolute quality of the presentations due to the untiring efforts of Dr. Christo Fernando, and it has become a much looked forward to evening of entertainment and enjoyment over the years. The event routinely takes place in front of an approving broad-based audience who are there to relish the enchantments of a captivating melodious evening of the most premier order.

This year, that celebrated musical whizz-kid and Social Secretary of the SLMA Dr. Christo Fernando, together with the other Social Secretary Dr. Pramilla Senanayake, have planned it to be a night to remember and an alluring social event. It is guaranteed to titillate the musical partialities of even the most perceptive enthusiast.

Members of the medical profession, their guests and members of the general public are most welcome to attend this melodious and spectacular performance by doctors and their family members. Entrance is free but one needs to register and obtain an entrance ticket from the Sri Lanka Medical Association at No.6, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.
